Eagle Academy Public Charter School, New Wing

Location: Washington D.C.

Area: 6,656 Ft2 (Padenpor) Gym Flooring

Installation: Abacus Sports Installations Ltd.

The Eagle Center at McGogney is an early-childhood educational facility that teaches pre-K through 3rd grade students. The Eagle Academy serves as a focal point to the community and is a place where residents can come and enjoy the pool and gymnasium in the afternoons.
After being awarded the property in 2009, Eagle Academy PCS began plans for a whole new edition to their existing school campus. The new building would boast an array of features including, but not limited to: a pool, gym, community room, offices, library, reading room, and computer lab for the students. A lot of research was put into the design for this building, and as a result it is very stylish in appearance and innovative in function. To fit with the modern theme, the General Contractor decided to go with Abacus’s PADENPOR™ floor in the gymnasium. The sleek, seamless look of the dark blue gym floor is the perfect visual touch to complement the balance of this modern building.
The school decided to go with a (#308) pigeon blue PADENPOR™ gym flooring with a large majestic eagle bust in the middle of the floor, representing the school mascot. The eagle has 4 added colors, which took an additional 24 hours to complete. This unique gym also had white game lines painted in for a standard size high school basketball court and stone grey lanes for a standard size volleyball court.
The floor consists of a 9mm rubber base mat with 2mm polyurethane poured over top. This offers 32% force reduction and is perfect for an elementary school gym. It took two weeks to install and cure the floor, which was on track with the construction timeline.
The gym was completed in September of 2013. On June 12th, 2014, the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) awarded an Award of Excellence for Institutional Architecture to Shinberg Levinas Architects for its design and renovation of the Eagle Center at McGogney.  We were part of the renovation through Whiting Turner Contracting Co.  We also notice that the job received a lovely write up in Architecture DC Magazine on page 57.
