About this Project
Franklin & Marshall – the thirteenth oldest institution of higher education in the United States – boasts a robust NCAA Division III athletic program that fields 27 teams. Despite the health of the athletics program, the locker room flooring used by the football and lacrosse teams left much to be desired.
Built in 1961 as part of the Mayser Physical Education Center, F&M’s locker room flooring featured an outdated epoxy floor, which wasn’t ideal for athletes. F&M turned to Abacus and its partner, Regupol America for initiative. Franklin & Marshall chose Regupol® Aktiv™ for its revolutionary high performance. Made of 65% post-consumer recycled tire rubber and 35% post-industrial EPDM rubber, the product provides high durability and extreme shock absorption.
Regupol Aktiv achieves color through a mixture of the black recycled rubber and the colored EPDM, in this case “Devil Blue.” Though the recycled content makes up the majority of the material, the locker room flooring presents the optical illusion of appearing more blue than black. The surface covers a total of 2,100 square feet and includes a 6’ x 16’ custom cut logo proudly displaying F&M’s team name – the Diplomats. Thanks to Abacus Sports Installations and Regupol America, the project was completed in time for start of the football season.
