The vibrancy of New York City demands workspaces that reflect the dynamic lifestyles of its professionals. In a city where competition for talent is fierce, companies continue to invest in innovative, tenant-focused amenities to create environments that inspire well-being, productivity, and connection. Modern office spaces are not just for work anymore—they are places where people can come together and recharge.

The design and execution of this court presented a unique challenge: it needed a flooring solution that balanced both athletic performance and durability for multipurpose use, to accommodate everything from sports activity to heavy rolling loads like tables, chairs, and equipment. To make things more challenging, there were concerns about the overall acoustics in the space that needed accommodation as well.

One example of this trend is Empire State Realty Trust (ESRT), owner and operator of the iconic Empire State Building. As part of its ongoing commitment to world-class tenant amenity offerings, ESRT recently introduced a brand-new club-level amenity space to enhance its nearly 65,000 square feet of offerings within the building.
At the heart of this new space lies a 2,500-square-foot multi-sport court, designed to provide tenants with a dynamic recreational outlet. Fully equipped with basketball backboards, game lines for both basketball and pickleball, telescoping bleachers, and projectors, this versatile court is a centerpiece for tenants seeking a place to connect and unwind.

To meet these specific requirements, ESRT turned to the experts at Tarkett Sports Indoor and Abacus Sports Installations. Together, they recommended the Tarkett Omnisports HPL (7+2) floor system, paired with a Lumaflex subfloor system. This high-performance solution was chosen for several reasons:
Shock Absorption: The Lumaflex subfloor system delivers exceptional shock absorption to offer similar comfort and safety levels found within collegiate or professional courts.
Durability: The Omnisports HPL (High Point Load) system, with its durable rubber backing, is specifically engineered to handle both athletic performance and non-sport use. It stands up to wear and tear to ensure long-lasting quality even under heavy loads.
Acoustics: Situated within a multi-story building, acoustic control was essential. The Lumaflex subfloor, as a floating system, reduces contact with rigid building structures, which improves sound absorption significantly and minimizes noise transmission.
The Omnisports HPL system also meets the stringent standards for sports performance, as defined by ASTM F2772, to ensure that athletes can enjoy top-tier safety, comfort, and playability on the court.
The result is a beautiful, versatile space that enhances the work-life experience for tenants at the “World’s Most Famous Building.” When it comes to exercise and events, tenants can now enjoy a premium, multi-functional facility. The installation will continue to add value to the building and its tenants for years to come, reinforcing its place in New York City as a forward-thinking, tenant-focused space.
